DeLand, FL on the St. Johns River Candle

Before there was DeLand, there was Persimmon Hollow, a small settlement named for the wild persimmon trees that once grew near the area’s natural springs. In those early days, the St. Johns River was the way in, with visitors arriving by steamboat to this little piece of inland Florida.

Today, DeLand has plenty of stories to tell. Stetson University anchors the city, skydivers fill the skies, and historic downtown is home to local shops, art, restaurants, and the unmistakable charm that has made DeLand one of Central Florida’s favorite small towns. Just outside the city, Hontoon Island brings you right back to the St. Johns River.
