Late Summer on the St. Johns

August in Florida is hot. Really hot.

By this point in the summer, we know the routine. Mornings on the river are usually calm, afternoons bring thunderstorms, and anything that needs to be done outside is best handled before noon.

But I still love this time of year.

There’s always something happening on the St. Johns. A heron fishing along the bank, boats heading by, an alligator floating a little closer than I’d prefer.

And sometimes they borrow your float.

And then, almost overnight, you start to notice that the days are getting a little shorter. It may still be 90 degrees outside, but somehow we Floridians decide it’s time for fall anyway.

We start thinking about football, fall festivals, pumpkins on porches that absolutely will not survive until Halloween, and all the scents that come with the season.

It happens at Lemon Bluff Candle, too.

Summer fragrances start making room for woods, spices, citrus, and some of the scents we associate with fall. This year, there are also a couple of new things coming that aren't candles at all.

I've been spending a lot of time thinking about Lemon Bluff Candle Company and where I want it to go next. The water and Florida will always be part of our story, but so will nature, home, and finding simple things that I genuinely love and want to share.

More on that later.

For now, it’s still summer on the St. Johns. Bare feet, river days, and nowhere you need to be.
