Wax melts are one of the easiest ways to add fragrance to your home without lighting a candle. They’re simple to use, easy to change with your mood or the season, and let you enjoy your favorite scents in just about any room.

If you’re new to wax melts, or you’ve used them forever but have wondered if you’re doing it “right,” here’s everything you need to know.

What Are Wax Melts?

Wax melts are pieces of scented wax designed to be warmed rather than burned with a wick. As the wax warms and melts, it releases fragrance into the room.

Unlike a candle, the wax itself doesn’t disappear as you use it. Eventually, the fragrance fades and the wax is ready to be replaced.

That makes wax melts especially nice for anyone who likes switching fragrances often. Today can smell fresh and clean. Tomorrow can smell like sandalwood and amber. Come October, all bets are off. Pumpkin has entered the room.

How Do You Use Wax Melts?

You’ll need a wax melt warmer designed with a dish or warming area for melting wax.

Place a small amount of wax in the warmer and turn it on. As the wax melts, the fragrance will begin to release.

You don't need to fill the warmer. Start with a small amount and add more if you'd like a stronger fragrance. The size of your room, the fragrance itself and the type of warmer you use can all affect how strongly you'll smell it.

One important distinction: a candle warmer lamp and a wax melt warmer aren't necessarily the same thing. Candle warmer lamps are designed to warm candles from above, while wax melt warmers have a dish specifically designed to hold melting wax. Always use your warmer according to its manufacturer's directions.

How Much Wax Melt Should You Use?

More isn't always better.

The right amount depends largely on the size of your warmer's dish. You want enough wax to create a nice melt pool without getting close to overflowing the dish.

Starting small also gives you more control over the fragrance level. Some scents naturally have more presence than others, so you may find that you need less of one fragrance and a little more of another.

How Long Do Wax Melts Last?

There's no single answer because fragrance longevity varies.

The amount of wax you're using, fragrance composition, warmer temperature, room size and even airflow in your home can affect how long you'll notice the scent.

The easiest rule is this: if you can no longer smell it when the wax is warm, it's probably time for fresh wax.

The wax may still look perfectly fine. That's normal. It's the fragrance that has gradually been released.

How Do You Change Wax Melts?

Once the fragrance has faded, let the warmer cool completely before removing the old wax.

Depending on your warmer, cooled wax may lift out easily. If it doesn't, follow the cleaning instructions provided with your particular warmer rather than scraping or forcing the wax out.

Then you're ready for something new.

And frankly, choosing the next scent might be the best part.
